Emilio Bouza completed his medical degree at the University of Madrid and his internship and residency at Clínica Puerta de Hierro in Madrid.  He served as an infectious disease Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles.  Afterwards he founded the infectious disease unit at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid and obtained a PhD in microbiology and parisitology.   In 1995 he was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) and has served as President and Secretary General of the Study Group of Nosocomial Infection of the ESCMID.  He served as Editor in Chief of the Journal Clinical Microbiology and Infection.  In 2012 received an Excellence Award from ESMID.  He is a member of the International Editorial Board of Clinical Infectious Diseases and has served on the editorial board of numerous journals.  Dr. Bouza has published over 550 peer-reviewed articles and 130 books and book chapters.  His research interests include: Nosocomial infections, ventilator associated pneumonia, systemic mycoses, bloodstream infections and endocarditis, catheter-related infections, clostridium difficile associated diarrhea and infections in compromised patients and transplant recipients.
